Job Description:
Overall Responsibility: In collaboration and in cooperation with the department head and the teachers, the laboratory technician assists teachers in the design, development, and implementation of labs, including the preparation of equipment, student instruction in the use of, and cleanup. In addition, the laboratory technician will also substitute for teachers when no assistance is available or if his or her area of expertise more closely matches the class to be substituted.
Specific Duties:
Inventory
- Create and maintain inventory list of all equipment
- MUIDS code, item name, price, location, quantity, and vendor information
- Perform monthly inventory check
- Report missing items to department head and adjust stock accordingly; Missing Item Report
- Report any broken equipment and adjust stock accordingly; Broken Item Report
Procurement
- In charge of procurement and delivery of materials for the Science Department accordingly to MUIDS Department Procurement Procedure
- Wish list from teachers to purchase request
- Contact vendors
- Request for Quotation; Price negotiation and comparison
- Evaluate specification
- Monitor delivery process
Maintenance and Cleaning
- Perform weekly cleaning of the eyewash stations and monthly cleaning of the safety showers
- Dispose of biohazard waste, following MUIDS procedures
- Clean and return equipment to designated storage areas
Planning
- Works with members of the department in curriculum planning for the Science track
- Budget planning; Capstone Budget, Science Department Annual Budget
- Collaborates and cooperates with teachers in the design, development and implementation of laboratory lesson plans that are challenging, coherent, and relevant
- Collaborate and cooperates with teachers to identify and select different investigative methods and resources, including technology, to meet varying needs of students to effectively perform laboratory work
- Assists with the preparation of class activities, technology support, and a variety of learning materials and resources for use in instruction and laboratory work
- Ensure that all necessary equipment is working and available before each class
- Set up all labs/ experiments, communicate with teachers regarding lab set up, and ensure that all needed equipment is available; safety checks on equipment before each lab, Experiment Record Sheet
- Prepare stock reagent and solutions prior to each lab
- Perform experiment planned by the teacher and report back on outcomes, offering suggestions for improvement
Instruction and Laboratory Classes
- Guide laboratory activities that contribute to climate where students are activity engaged in meaningful and challenging learning experiences
- Assist the teacher to design, develop, and implement laboratories; Provide feedback to teachers regarding successes and areas of improvement for laboratory experiments
- Assist the teacher to instruct and monitor students in the use of laboratory materials and equipment
- Responsible for grading 20% of student’s lab activity for behavior and participation
- Assist the teacher to observe and provide appropriate feedback to students on their work and behavior during laboratories; Responsible for rating lab safety MSDS for students before each lab
- Assist the teacher to encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
- Complete Laboratory Incident Form if incident occurs in Laboratory, and adjust stock as necessary
Student Management
- Manage a positive environment in which students are encourages to be actively engaged in the learning process
- Manage student dress code and behavior during the laboratories, particularly footwear, applying appropriate measures where necessary in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems at the school
- Provide First Aid as necessary, and /or escort students to the School Clinic; Have knowledge of emergency procedures of MUIDS
Assessment and Evaluation
- As directed, maintain and complete records of student progress and development in laboratory work
- As directed, prepare required reports on students and activities
- Communicate information as directed to colleagues, both orally and in writing, regarding student performance, progress, needs, or safety and behavior concerns
Professionalism
- Assist the teacher to update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by law, Ministry policies, and school regulations
- Participate in department and school meetings, and where appropriate, parent meetings
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance teaching quality and the instructional environment
- Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, colleague, and the community
- Undertake on-going professional development
- Adhere to all MUIDS regulations, particularly those addressing safety, at all times
