Overall Responsibility: In collaboration and in cooperation with the department head and the teachers, the teaching assistant assists teachers in the design, development, and implementation of lessons. The Teaching Assistant will also substitute for teachers when asked by an administrator or the administrator’s designee.
Specific Duties:
Planning
Collaborates and cooperates with teachers in the design, development, and implementation of lesson plans that are challenging, coherent, and relevant
Collaborates and cooperates with teachers to identify and select different instructional methods and resources, including technology, to meet varying needs of students to understand content and language
Assists with the preparation of class activities, technology support, and a variety of learning materials and resources for use in instruction
Instruction
Implement instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful and challenging learning experiences
Assist the teacher to design, develop, and implement instructional activities
Assist the teacher to use a variety of teaching/learning strategies to address different learning styles and student needs
Assist the teacher to instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
Assist the teacher to systematically integrate technology so that all students develop a wide range of technological skills
Assist the teacher to observe and provide appropriate feedback to students on their work and behavior
Assist the teacher to encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
Report and share feedback on lesson implementation and student progress with teachers
Student Management
Manage a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
Manage student dress code and behavior in and outside the classroom, applying appropriate measures where necessary in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems at the school
Assessment and Evaluation
As directed, assign and grade class work, homework, tests, and projects
As directed, maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development
As directed, prepare required reports on students and activities
Communicate information as directed to colleagues, both orally and in writing, regarding student progress and student needs
Professionalism
Assist the teacher to update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by law, Ministry policies, and school regulations: including daily class attendance and grade book
Assist the teacher to participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations
Participate in department and school meetings, and where appropriate, parent meetings
Collaborate with colleagues to enhance teaching quality and the instructional environment
Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, colleagues, and the community
Undertake on-going professional development
Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: being on time and meeting deadlines
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors
